The Mississippi River offers teachers a perfect theme to link subject matter across the entire curriculum – science, history, cultures, geography, reading, writing, art, music, computer learning, and more. The Mississippi National River & Recreation Area provides a variety of teacher resources (many available online), including science and thematic classroom activities, key words and concepts, book lists, posters, booklets, music, and an art contest. Many of these resources are used in conjunction with the award-winning Big River Journey program for students in grades 4-6; however, the materials can be adapted to suit other grades as well.
